Why is this such an uncommon tail shape?

It seems like it would be a sweet middle ground between a Squash Tail and Rounded Tail?

fashion? I think the difference between a rounded diamond and a round tail would be fairly minimal, but the 'point' of the diamond will be harder to glass and more fragile, so maybe thats why - not many benefits over a rounded tail but some small disadvantages.

On the other hand, a normal diamond vs a squash tail, probably the squash tail does the job a bit better due to the release from the corners.

Surf Science has good explanations about tail shapes and many other design elements. I'm getting a longboard next week and will spend some time here, too!

A rounded diamond will be basically the same as a rounded squash... or exactly the same if you round if off enough.
Not sure there would be a noticeable advantage to a diamond on a 6'10 quad. By that, do you mean a gunny narrow 6'10 quad (debatable advantage of a diamond-shaped tail) or a fat fishy quad (no advantage)?

I don't think a diamond tail offers any more performance so just go for a squash since you get 2 nice pivot points to dig your tail

This board, but as a 6'10 x 20.5 x 2 7/8th ... quad fin.

What about the bat wing tail? That's a pretty rare tail type but seems to have a few hybrid advantages
