My 1st attempt shaping my own board - SO FUN

Postby stoney85 » Wed Jul 27, 2016 8:31 pm

hey guys,
New to forum.
I shaped my own board this past 6 months - yeah it took ages.
I had the blank for a year before i started. lol
My dad used to shaped board for himself on the central coast of OZ ages ago when he was young. he helped with glassing.
Thanks to WIZZ surfboards for the glass and blank.

I would do it again!!

I made a little vid if you want to watch

Hi Stoney, I'm a transplanted central coaster, Forries being my former home break and Wizz* was my preferred shaper. Knew me as Jaffa and every board he made for me had a Jaffa logo on it.

Crack neck and north Shelley also were favoured spots.

Looks to be a reasonable first board with the usual Lumps and bumps and odd lack of symmetry but all my first ones had that too.
How did it go?
* Wizz of Wizsticks on the central coast of NSW designed the popular 7S board range for GSI. He will talk with you to design what works for you , a true custom shaper!
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Cool. How much did the materials, minus the tools, cost you approximately?

So how does the board surf? I made my own board once also but it was much simpler in those days no board cord and single glassed in fin. I messed upon the bottom coat too by not mixing enough resin or maybe wasting it by not spreading it around evenly. In the final product however you couldn't tell.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I made my board because I had these ideas about how to make a board that was fast and could ride high on a wall, basically a tube riding board. It was a 7' swallow tail with really straight and hard and thin rails. It did really well in steep waves but it didn't turn well. Not that I couldn't turn it but I had to use more force to turn it however on the waves I usually rode it on it was fine. Prior to making my board I watched an expert make one and a novice make one so I had an idea of how to do it. Fun but it was a lot of work and didn't save me that much money. I never tried it again.
