There's a post from SURFER magazine on Facebook of Duran Barr weaving through a pack of Kook sponge boarders. I don't know how to post the video. Can some one up load the video so the discussion can begin. This will be a hot topic.

In the first video - No issue with the first turn. But it looks to me that he had other options than going for a route that needs the jump. He wanted that. What an A$$.

A lesson taught, but a fail would have rendered the ollying board liable if something had gone wrong!
Contributory negligence by the pair of sponge brains, would mitigate the issue somewhat!
They definitely wouldnt have had a clue about any etiquette in the surf

One comment was "Total dick move the guy was out of the way and paddling to avoid but he went straight for him. Could easily have been a nasty collision." From what I see, the sponger was NOT paddling to get out of the way. This topic will really be polarizing, you either think the shortboarder is an a$$ or the sponger is a Kook.
1st sponger drops in and forces a high line since he has to go up and over.

2nd sponger is in the wrong place at the wrong time. You going to blame the train or the car crossing the tracks for the accident ?

It is such a hard call either way, some people might argue for a surf rating and a surfer rating sort of like double black diamond runs in skiing? Impossible to enforce.
So many learners in a good surf are like driving clapped out VW beetles out of the pits onto a formula 1 track on race day!
Speed humps, thank heavens the olly guys had the skill to pull it off.

I agree. It's a hard call. I think the golden rule is probably the best course to follow.

That's not true obviously. I'm with Oldie the surfer wanted that, putting the sponger at risk.

Even if the sponger was paddling the wrong way, a very anoying thing I agree, when you intentionally put someone at risk like this you're an a$$.

But I must admid thinking of scaring the sh$t out of kooks sometimes when they make me bail the ride.. This thought came to me after a guy complaining I put him at risk after paddling in front of me, and me having to abort the wave no way near the guy..

I just don't have the skills to intentionally surf that close to others in a safe way. Still in my opinion it's an act of aggression and therefore should be avoided.

The reason why I wanted someone to post the "original" video, not the one currently on Youtube, is that you can see better that the sponger DOES NOT try to PADDLE out of the way. If you view it again clearly, you can see he is flutter KICKING. He kicks up water into the sky going no where. If anything he doesn't know how to paddle or he just so damn tired that he can't paddle anymore.

I always tell people, I can get around one kook, it's the second that messes thing up. I anticipate what the first drop-in kook does when I am taking off. It usually the 2nd kook dropping in after the first that I can't get around.

The worse is when they say " you could've gone around ","The ocean is for everyone, I can be where ever I want", or " can't you stop ?". I hope those beginner-intermediates and half-goods, that side with the kook, are able to "just stop" or "go around". It's just not that easy.

It wasn't on this forum, but a comment on the Surfer site that said " looks like he aimed for the guy ". I've used a aim at technique in the past get around kooks in the way, which I call the Freeze'um and Leave'um. How many times have you done the supermarket cart shuffle ? The lady goes left so you go right, then she thinks you going one way so she turns back right, back forth back forth. Hell, I'll just stay in one place and let her decide. It works like that sorta in opposite. You give them eye contact and show exactly where you're going, they freeze like a deer in the head lights, then you proceed to go around. You don't give them a chance to "try" to avoid you and end up making things worse. It's almost like you control them like a puppet on a string.

I had a situation where I was inside of a SUP guy and really SUPs have a wide range of places they can be on a wave but I was inside of this one guy and he made it a point to head towards me even though I went the other way from him initially and changed direction once when he changed. I figured I could not get out of his way so I just stopped and waited for him still 30 yards out and he came right at me and turned right next to me. He could have been a lot of places but not if he was a jerk. If he was a jerk he had to surf right next to me. Oh well that wasn't much of a problem for me I just sat there and waited. I was lining up inside of them in an area where they could not lineup due to waves breaking outside of me. I was poaching the waves they missed. None of the other SUP guys did that just the one jerk. If he wanted to keep me out of the lineup that didn't work but some of the nicer SUP guys managed to lose their boards going through the surf on a wave I was riding and whacked me in the shins and broke my toe nail but didn't knock me off my board. Those guys made me worry about being out there with them.
