This may sound a little weird, because I'm a surfer and were all surfers, but I havent watched much Pro surfing and I was wondering how the system works

The system, I mean the heats, are there semi finals... could somebody explain it to me?

Cheers

Based on points for each wave riden.

usually 20-30min heats of 2-3-4 people. there is a max number of waves you can take usualy aounf 15-20 and the best 3 waves are scored to give the heat result. Top 1 or two people go through.

Check out the BSA and the ISA for the offical marking skemes.

Ok imagine you have 16 surfers in a competition.
You have 2 surfers per heat = 8 heats.
The loser of each heat is out of the competition, and the winner goes on to the next round.
So now there are 8 surfers left in the comp.
Next round (quarter finals) consists of 4 heats of 2 surfers in each heat.
Winner goes thru to next round, losers out of comp.
Next round (simi-finals) = 2 heats of 2.
Final = 1 heat of 2.
Winner of final is the champion! :D

In the ASP WCT and WQS events the surfers are judged on their best 2 waves of the heat. Each wave is scored out of 10 points - e.g. the perfect ride on any 1 wave would score 10 points. These 2 wave scores are added together and therefore out of a maximum of 20 points.

Incidently I think the ASP change from being judged on 3 waves/heat to 2 waves/heat is deffo loads beter. It means that the surfers are able to concentrate on getting quality rides and not just quantity, and it promotes more exciting and progressive surfing therefore.

There you go then!

btw you also have the "double knock out" style in which you have a chance to reenter the competion in a 2nd heat. (ie everyone has two heats and so if you only win one of thoese heats you are still in the comp and continue to the final rounds)

or is that confusing you :p

its called a repechage i think, the second chance thing - when i entered my first comp i thought repechage meant the money you pay at the beginning (entry fee i guess)

Thanks for info, I too was wondering how the Tour worked. I'd love to see the events on t.v., but I don't have cable and even if I did, we don't get Fuel t.v. in our area, so the coverage would be sporadic. Last I saw was Luke Egan win at Mundaka last Fall.
