And that was only the second-scariest thing to happen in Australia this week...

Croc kills woman in QLD

I guess you are more likely to die form a bee sting, lightning strike, drowning or car accident than getting bitten by a shark in Australia but a little more likely to bit by a shark than by a crock

Since I moved to the Gold Coast about 3 years ago, I've seen a couple of snakes, a couple of poisonous spiders, and zero sharks (and no crocs - they live further north).

In the same time, there have been 3 fatal road accidents literally within sight of my home break (the last one on Sunday evening).

I don't worry too much about sharks.

I used to live in Mandurah a few minutes south of there. It always felt super sharky and indeed I did once see a fin in the distance, luckily far enough away for me to get out of the water comfortably.

One report says the attack was of the "breach" variety. As in where the shark launches itself out of the water.

I'm certainly glad I surf in Canada. Not very sharky. Apparently, the Orcas keep any sharks of size out of these waters (by eating them).

But if you lived in Canada then no chance of sharks or crocs as mentioned.

But very much increased chance of hyperthermia. And Americans ( :D )

I wonder though, if those statistics include people who never set foot near an ocean.

Don't forget Drop bear fatalities, numerous types of deadly jellyfish, funnel web spiders, redbacks biting the dangley parts in a toilet, snakes, scorpions, disemboweling by kangaroo and emus.
Ozone layer holes and skin cancer if the other things don't get you first.

BUT it's HOME!

......if you don't live and surf in Australia....

Indonesia is the largest Sharkfin fishing grounds in the world.....disgusting and terrible practice that is losing ground slowly as awareness settles in among world diners, but end result is an imbalanced eco system that has few sharks.

I've seen a koala disembowel a dog, those tree climbing claws do the job, they are not venomous claws like the platypus I forgot to mention.

Koala pee is highly concentrated eucalyptus oil and will dissolve plastics and paint make sure the koala you cuddle has been pre peed or you will need to wash for several days but everyone around you will have clear sinuses
