Surfing Waves

Sad story, I've surfed that wave a lot 7 years ago (how time flies ) it was a beautiful and (then) uncrowded wave.

"It was known for churning out mechanical barrels up to 10 seconds long, but not any more. Nikkos, a mysto righthand reef off Bali’s east coast, has been destroyed by a seawall, which was built right through the wave by a luxury hotel."

I read about his and waited to hear why you or bigH never said anything about it. Looks like it is still rideable but if you fall at the end it may be the last thing you do

That is the break where i cut my teeth and learned to surf....3 min from my job....its where i got barreled for the first time....where i learned aboit currents and what paddle fitness meant.....i never surf there now, it's ruined.

Doesnt break at high tide, mushy mid tide, knee deep to exposed reef on low tide.....still rideable, been out a dozen times since december but it isnt a fitst choice.

I was just there this morning.....stop in the overloik parking lot and watch the waves if im early to work.....do this 3 times a week at least.. sad.

The Balinese are getting more and more angry at the un-regulated (and really just plain illegal) project development on the Island. It is a sad thing to see this happening, it was one of the first things that I noticed when I stayed here from 2008. Since then I've only seen it getting worse

There's this nice small road thru the rice fields connecting Brawa and Batu Bolong in the Changgu area, it's a designated Green Zone, no building permit possible, it should be.. It was just sawa in 2008, incredible to drive there, the view so beautiful. Now it's packed with new buildings for tourism. It gives such a powerless feeling seeing this damage continue.

Bali's economy is based on tourism, they risk it all if they cannot stop this..

Looking at the projects underway it is already too late....shame about the kempinski project is that there has been a virtual work stoppage for 6 mos and rumor has it that the project was abandoned and sold. The jetty will remain and all for naught. Whether it will ever get used is a question; project is a mammoth 700+ room development in a struggling and very competitive hotel climate.....i cant fault them for walking away, only for a lack of vision.

It seemed like a nice surf destination once. I remember reading about epic surfing trips there when I was a teen and fantasizing about the place. Now the vibe there for me is just a downer. That's actually probably good for Bali (one less tourist choking up the beaches). I'll leave the Bali beach frenzy to the Europeans and stick with cold water destinations.

Short statement, I have been going to Bali since 1979, it has changed as has surfing attitudes.
The secret is if you get to know Bali and particularly genuine Balinese families and participate in the culture the beauty and the uncrowded spots are still there!
You just have to know how to be!

I was out at a spot yesterday that rarely breaks, but is great when it does. All alone which is a delicious luxury....the more i surf here the more i learn where and more importantly when to go to a spot off the beaten path....no one os sharing that gold so i just have to look...

That makes me angry. California has a coastal commission with oversight over land use and public access in the coastal zone. Since 1972, it has done a good job with preservation efforts but the director was recently fired as a result of pro development lobbying. Each new development we allow will be only be enjoyed by the people who can afford it.

Perhaps Bali Public Works can be convinced to help. They've supported beach protection before.

There was a work stoppage for awhile (months) on the site. Rumor is that kempinski sold to jumeriah and now work has begun again in earnest.

I was wondering if it is possible and doable to create some permanent and consistend artificial reefs, say in Kuta beach?

If man can destroy waves, maybe they can also build them? It would be great for surf tourism if there were some more nice waves.

If Gunung Agung can build great waves why not we?

There is a lot of activity and money going into creating commercial wavepools, that need an extreme amount of expensive energy. The beauty of an artificial reef is, once build, you don't need to generate energy to create the wave. Well, as long you build it in the right place.

Great for swell exposed long stretches of beach I guess. Thx for the links I'll look into it.

Kuta to seminyak would be prime; it would have to require big picture thinking as money would be spent with no direct returns.....not something that happens here (how many public parks or government maintained public use facilities such as libraries or sports playing fields exist? Even basics like garbage removal and processing....)....would love to see it but unless they put a fence aroind it and can charge admission at local and visitor rates I don't think it will.
