How to improve your surfing according to John Florence

Postby oldmansurfer » Thu Apr 14, 2016 7:09 pm

Here is a blog from an interview with John. http://blog.swell.com/improve-your-surfing-with-john-john-florence I don't agree with everything he says but he has some great stuff to say about surfing. Each person needs to find their own level of pleasure or torture or whatever they want out of surfing.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

If you are a better than average surfer and have time to surf all you want and want to ride short boards and live right next to some of the best waves in the world this is all really good advice. And if you are 5 or 6 years old you might end up as good as John Florence.

"A lot of people use their foot, but I always use my knee."

Okay advice if you have a board sponsor and 50+ boards a year.

It's obvious his advice is great if you are him but then again it's quite interesting and can have useful application if you just realize you aren't him.

“It depends on the wave, but if it’s somewhere really shallow, where you’re doing airs into one foot of water, I do what I call a starfish. You just lay all your arms and legs out flat so you don’t go as deep. And bellyflop, if you can."

Hmm.. would doing a "starfish" be less dangerous, I mean, less likely to get you seriously injured?

I think not putting yourself into the position of needing to do the starfish would be helpful in not getting yourself injured. It may not keep you from immediate life threatening injuries but it may save you from injuries that would make you have to not surf.
