Surfing Waves

Ok so I'm gonna be getting a custom made fish here soon. I can't seem to decide on the color I want. I love day glow colors but just can't toss the yum yum yellow idea. So bringing it here what color or color scheme do yall like?

im also thinking of having them paint that black and white stripe on the bottom for the shark deterant. Don't know if it really works but we will see.

When it comes to surfing fashion I have always kept it simple. I avoid being flashy. If you're going to be look-at-me flashy, then I would recommend you have the skills to match the flash. However, if the fluorescent colors and flash get your adrenaline pumping and inspire your surfing, then go for it. In my opinion surfing fashion is, like everything else in surf culture, extremely hierarchical. So you can either reject the hierarchy and be an individual or tastefully blend in. Most surfers would prefer blending in as do most people. All that aside, I'm a sucker for painted rail borders (I forget what that's called).

yea im a very outgoing person. I like loud colors but I also don't know if I believe the whole do sharks go after bright colors. maybe ill do just the top of the board and do the black and white on the bottom... lol

If you like it loud and proud, then follow your muse. I would worry more about microbes and exostosis then I would about sharks (unless you live on Reunion Island). I don't see any drawback to getting the bottom of your board painted with a shark-repellent pattern, but if you really want a certain color or decoration you like looking at, then go for it. It's like playing a particular guitar you love; if you have it handy and in sight, there's a good chance you won't be able to resist picking it and playing it.

Mohawk - this is what I got for my custom board a few years ago (although I was very close to having purple instead of green, probably should have in hindsight). However, the colour is all on the bottom, I tend not to think about it when surfing! However, you might be able to notice the owl and the star on the top of the board, which are graphics glassed onto the board - they represent my kids and I do notice them as they are right in front of my face (if only to think 'mmm, probably time to go home and look after the kids' )

I also now usually don't surf this as much, and my other board is totally white all over (I bought it second hand, so nothing to do with me) and I do notice it being a bit boring - but not that often, only when I'm walking into the water or have nothing else to think about (pretty rare when surfing).

that said, I think having an interesting board is worth the effort and will definitely do it next time I get one made. If you want to get colour, go for it.

I can guarantee that you almost certainly won't get attacked by a shark if you get the shark-deterrent paint job*

Whatever you choose get the spray on the foam before you glass it. Secondhand market paint on top of glass usually is trouble and it can rub off as well (seats seem to get the worst).

Get your board coloured in a way that pleases you, not the rest of us!

im gonna end up doing what I want of course. I just want some ideas. and want to know what everyone else likes.

I keep my boards white w/gloss finish, it just feels classy to me and its a reminder to myself that for me surfing is about connecting with the ocean, it's about peace and zen, it's a stress reliever and the one thing that keeps me sane, and it's not about fashion or winning a world championship. Of course that's just me and my opinion but I'm also a pretty boring person

big stress reliever for me also. I just like color and it makes me happy. Not doing it cause others think its cool. I like hot pink but most guys wouldn't but that's me. Im also 6'4 240 lbs so most aint gonna make fun of me either.....

now im starting to think about no color. it will save money and I can spend the extra money on better fins and a leash and maybe a surfing cap.

That's a great looking board. What is the function of that circular area underneath the nose of the board? I've never seen that. Is there a name for that?

Stepped nose concave/Bottom shape:
Here we have a nose concave like no other available----an integral part of the whole design. Rather than blending gradually into the bottom---the concave’s perimeter is deliberately abrupt with a tangible lip. Why? When forward trimming-- downward pressure on the nose from the surfers weight brings this lip into direct water contact. The resulting turbulence creates strong uplift---compensating for their weight and allowing for noseriding (10 over if you’re having an on day)...even on a 7’0’ board. The unique look of this concave is one thing--- but feeling is believing.

Have I ever done a '10 over' - no where near. Have stuck my toes near the nose now and then. It seems to help to compensate for the fairly flat rocker, not so much in taking off but when scooting along (or maybe the refinement in the nose creates some extra rocker when you weight a bit back, but allows you to go forward and flatten out a bit)

Its a standard part of the board but to be honest I probably dont consciously take advantage of that design element very much eg nose riding or 'very forward' trimming.

Wow, that's exactly what I was thinking when I saw it, but I didn't mention it because I thought I might sound stupid. The board looked a bit too small to be a noserider so I figured I was probably on the wrong track. Do you think it makes a difference in stability when you move to the front of the board compared to your rides on other boards? Can you sense that uplift the shaper describes? From the way the shaper describes the board, it sounds like the board actually has more rocker or maybe the nose of the board is angled up more. Also, the shaper descibes that circle as concave, but it looks convex to me. Am I wrong? It's hard to tell from the image.

The board is a 7ft4 so probably nose rideable if you aren't big and fat like me. Plus I mainly fast beach breaks rather than nice points (that's my excuse!)

You can read more about it here although I extracted the bit about the nose. It is a 'concave', as in it goes into the board (its like a circle has been cut out of the nose). I think you need to look at it from the boards perspective (does it go into the board or out of the board)

Its a very stable board - its just a bit flat rockered for beach breaks except toward high tide. Its goes fantastic on nice long crumbling waves, not so great on steep sucky low tide waves like I usually surf. But, yes, you can definitely notice the uplift as you walk toward the nose - its really good if you pop up in the wrong spot as well, because you can be almost anywhere on the board other and it still goes along. Like a 9ft board in that sense, but with the 'benefit' of being shorter.

Although I think it does slow the board down a bit. It doesn't have quite the glide you would expect from a board of that length and in weaker waves (waist high etc), which should be fine for a mini mal, it doesn't get up enough speed. So basically its a slowish, very stable but easy to turn and very forgiving board. Its really good when I cant be bothered or feel really tired. Summer afternoons when the wind dies down but its still high 20s....

It's a cool design. I'll have to try one like that someday.

so I ordered the board. im getting it in a light aqua blue color. almost a neon blue without the neon.... im pumped. ill post pics when I get her.
