I work at a high school, one of my ex-students is working on a project at San Diego State.
For their project they have decided to look at the marketability of a surfboard leash that can warn you about certain contaminants. Interesting.
Here is the link, it takes about 5 minuets, hope you can help:

For you IB.....done.
BTW, I wouldn't use the product not because I don't care to know but because I don't think that it would be as good a leash as a leash designed to be the best leash available and nothing more. I would use a keychain like plastic disc card that could attach to the board at the leash rope attachment; wouldn't mind that at all....probably would be cheaper to make as well and you could sell them right next to the cashier; easy upsell at point of sale.

Did it as well, but fortunately for me 'bad water quality' is, well, never! Maybe sometimes there are jellyfish or seaweed
Although how many surfers will get to the beach, suited up, paddle out and look at their water quality leash and think 'mmm, its over the threshold, I should go in'. I think ignorance is bliss at times

Thanks everyone, they are tracking this forum and the results. I too am not sure how it would do in the market, but I suggested to them that rather try to come up with a new leash that they market at established companies that make leashes as the target market.
Interesting.
And yes, thanks for helping my students

Just finished!
The technology could also be installed on ocean buoys and setup to broadcast data to the internet. The public could use it to make recreation plans and clean-up problem areas. It could be marketed to local governments and chambers of commerce in beach communities as well as websites like Magic Seaweed.
