Look in Surfboard advice, there are multiple discussion around why I would recommend something around 9ft you could hire a soft board first, or go and hire a long board that's hard. Go hard from the start if you are serious about your goal!
Welcome to a brave new world, which beaches will you pick as your school ground?

Thanks for your reply.
I just move to Mexico and live in the west coast (pacific ocean.) I used to be living inland far from the coast so had no opportunity to try surfing before, yesterday I went on the beatch with the board I just made but the waves were too rushy and didn't even let me stand on it. I am total rookie with no experience at all.....there's no surfing school or center here so watching youtube tutorials is my only option to learn basics. I' ve seen good reviews on this greco board: http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Foamb ... oard+greco
I am jus not sure if I should take 8 or 9 feet long. What do you think?

Go the 9ft, more paddle power means more waves caught = more learning more quickly!
