I keep losing contacts

I try to keep my eyes closed under water, of course, but many times when I get tumbled, one contact gets ripped right off.

I have a high prescription so surfing without contacts is kind of impossible, surfing with one contact is hard.

I am not eligible for Lasik.

Any ideas?

There are prescription surfing/sports glasses/goggles available, should they be unavailable in your script then perhaps wearing some so plain ones so the lenses are not lost.

I keep thinking about some of these and you can buy a leash in addition. Hmm good point on wearing some goggles just to make sure my contacts don't fall off. But I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, I KNOW I will lose them somehow

I don't recommend these - first of all, they're sunglasses and not goggles, so you'll still get water flushed through and maybe still lose your contacts (I guess they'd give you some protection, but not 100%), and secondly I found that they really mist up and make you blind anyway!
I guess that they might be okay depending on the air and water temp - I was using them in the UK and they really didn't work, but I've not tried them in the warmer water/air of Oz.

thanks for the reply DBBB, seems like there is some natural product out there to keep them from fogging up.
I think as long as the brunt of the force of the water is absorbed by the lenses and frame, the contacts should stay in.
Do you think they would work with a hood?

I have a pair of those....they won't work. If you take a shot on the face for what I imagine would be hard enough to take out a contact, these tend to get ripped off my face...You will lose your contacts if you depend on these. I only wear them in no. Aggressive surf where I'm not duck diving much if at all and can control my riding (take the wave and ride till kicking out). Those same conditions you would be able to keep your contacts in without assistance.

Very interesting to me that SeaSpecs and contacts don't work for Drowning and Big H because this combo works great for me! I've even been blasted face first while paddling out with no contacts or sunglasses problems. Big H mentioned thes sunglasses getting rpped from head. In response, I say:

1. This used to happen to me when I was a total kook and had magnificant wipeouts, and
2. Non-stretch head band is critical for keeping glasses on head (Seaspec has non-strech band; tried stretch band glasses first & they came off)

for the next six months of winter/spring surfing it would be physically impossible for goggles to be ripped off my face anyway because of the hood.

But I also don't want to hurt myself. I'm trying to get to my next stage in surfing - riding a shortboard off steeper waves, already dealing with a fear of commitment to the wave, and I think having lost contacts on some wipeouts contributes to that. But I don't want to now be afraid of the goggles lens popping out, or of losing some expensive goggles

Fear of commitment is your key, everything else is a distraction from what is really stopping you!
Go up in steepness and size by increments as much as the surf will allow. Go out and play on a bigger day on a body board , set out to go over that edge and experience the whumping! If it wasn't winter coming your way I'd say play at body surfing too.

Go over the fall line, if you have to think about being more committed you are not committed.
You'll never ever know if you never ever go!
Are your other water skills OK , like swimming and being confident in the surf zone , if they are not the that is an issue behind commitment! Build up the other skills, beach knowledge and swimming to safety.

There is still for every surfer a top limit, big wave nutters have something mental broken and their cahones over ride their brain

Hollow, barreling surf yesterday, 10-12ft....glass ripping conditions.

For what it's worth, glasses get ripped off usually when either duck diving, turtle rolling or duck dipping....wipeouts not so much because I do reach with a palm to the face on the way down....hands are busy in the other pursuits....and again, like I said, depends on the conditions....longboarding on a wave with a channel in moderate surf is perfect sunglasses conditions....yesterday was not.

I got Lasik surgery and that helped me progress in surfing. I didn't have to close my eyes anymore when the wave stood up going down the line. Plus finally I was able to see the "cloud" under the wave during the duck dive. My surfing definitely improved after getting Lasik. My wife who has very bad eye sight and a thin eyeball layer thingy, just got Lasik with the technology they have here in Japan. You should check in to that.

Worse than googles flinging off your head, would be them flipping over backwards and pressing on your eyes. That sucked.

Mate, seriously look into Ortho k, ive been wearing them for 10 years amazing. Put them in at night before bed, take em out in the morning when you get up hey presto 20/20 vision all day. Do a web search if you dont believe me - no one does

You can undergo a lasik treatment. I happen to take a page on LASIK treatment and it had explanations of those who are eligible for a LASIK treatment. I found it quite informative.
