I’m a beginner surfer, but I can ride a longboard. My board is 8'4". Been surfing for less than a year, but want to switch to a shortboard. Can I ride a 5’8’’ board, or is that just too short to start with? I’m 6’2”.

Thats way too short dude. Ur a big guy, get something like 6'6 and bigger (the bigger and wider the more stable).

A 5'8" would be a good learners board for a 10 year old...
Are you serious or just taking the piss? A board of that size would almost be a body-board for someone of your dimensions...

I'm such a tard, lol, I logged out and posted. I'd say...6ish months. This board would be for when I got more experienced, I'm just asking if it would hold me at 5'5" 140 lbs.

A 5'8" sounds to me suspicously like a "grom-rocket", I bet it's 16.5 inches wide & less than 2 inches thick...if so forget it. If it's a wide fish-like board you'd maybe just get by to start with...but it would be a frustrating board to learn on. Your dimensions - I'd go to a 6 -6'4" board with nice wide & generous proportions to start with.
