I brought a crossfit fanatic to surfing. On the first day he was catching 2-3 feet waves. For the first hour or so he made surfing look so easy. He was actually catching waves by himself. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Then he convinced me to join crossfit, I nearly passed out the first 2 times. It's so intense and I read that many people sustain injuries from crossfit.

Staying in shape is so much better than not staying in shape but you should do some swimming too.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I did a previous post on cross fit (responding to BaNZ, who appears to have encountered some of the issues I raised!)

viewtopic.php?t=24004#p176447

There is nothing bad and everything good about getting stronger (safely) and fitter, whether through the gym or cross fit etc. It may or may not transfer directly to surfing (as mentioned in my post above, the specific adaption principle is very important) but it will definitely help. Obviously for surfing the key muscles are your back muscles and your core muscles (including glutes); but it will all be useful in terms of injury prevention if nothing else. Doing weights generally doesn't push the cardio side of things, unless you are doing something like density training/short rest periods. However, you might ride or play sports or jog etc.

I think a really useful exercise for surfing is the rope climb, without using your feet. Or pull ups.

Btw, if you can manage the 'terminator look' with 2 days a week at the gym - turn pro!

2 out of 3 of us who got invited to a friends crossfit gym all injured ourselves within the first week. But they didn't think it was crossfit. More because we are now in our 30's and the last time we did any gym exercise was back in school. So we over estimated our abilities to do things.

However doing kettlebell swings seriously kills my back so I stopped going. It definitely felt good doing crossfit. The people in there are so motivated and nice. But I'm to worried that I might injure myself so I stopped going.

aah, the forever occurring older man trying to re-live his glory days when no preparation was required... been there!

Yes one big problem with classes, of any kind not just cross fit, is that the participants have to self regulate themselves in the face of being told to go harder or faster or to keep up with everyone else (and perhaps not appreciating the risks involved in a new activity). The instructor is too busy to pay attention to an individual. The key is to work into it gradually, just like you don't start surfing on 10ft waves even though there are people who make that look fun

back pain from kettlebells probably indicates a hip hinge deficit, which is very common amongst grown ups esp if you sit down a lot. You can work on it if you want, just google 'hip hinge'. Hip strength is useful for surfing, but the hip hinge itself isn't really a surfing thing.
