Hi everyone

That's my first post here :)

Do you guys/gals have any tips for keeping my hair in better shape?
I saw this topic:
viewtopic.php?t=14992

- they write they put conditioner on before they surf - do they mean Leav-in conditioner or regular one?

Would love to hear more tips (and maybe more updated ones :) )

Thanks in advance!
Willy

Hi and welcome Willy. Perhaps if we saw a photo of your hair we could give you much more informed suggestions as to how best keep your hair in tip top shape. Bouffant, perm or my personal favourite the mullet....

Kelly Slater has the answer:

Just kidding

I never mind too much about my hair, reason why it oscilates between shaved and a little grown, until I beat the lazyness to shave it again!

Welcome to the forum by the way!

Never really had any problems at all with my hair. Well sort of......Once I was having a problem with hair hanging in my face when I was surfing. My hair was kind of shaggy so I went to the barber and got it cut. Back out and still had hair hanging in my face. Now I was like 50 something then I need glasses to see well but never wear them when I comb my hair or shave my face so basically every time I look in the mirror I am not wearing glasses but I put my glasses on and look in the mirror and it's my eyebrows. I was so shocked. I mean you live a good number of years and your eyebrows are just there then you start to get old and they become these growing tendrils that need to be cut or they hang down in front of your eyes and irritate you. Not to mention hair growing out of other parts of your anatomy....sorry I mentioned it. Well something you have to look forward to as you grow older.

This is true!  Often I leave my hair as is after a surf, sometimes going weeks without a wash other than seawater. I can't get that look from adding product! haha Some of the girls in my office said my hair had such great 'body' and asked what I used.
They were less impressed when I said a combination of weeks of sea water..

Thanks for the welcomes :)
I see this post is driven to so many different ways so I'll narrow it to only one Q:
ppl say they put conditioner on before they surf - do they mean Leave-in conditioner or regular one?

Cheers!

Conditioner floating around in the surf. Yuck ! More chemicals to kill the reef.

My friend who is a girl use to go to the showers and soak her hair BEFORE going into the ocean. I told her " hey, you going to get your hair wet anyways ! " . She explained that hair is like a sponge. By soaking it first, the hair gets saturated with fresh water instead of soaking up salt water.

I would just wear a surf cap or beanie. It also helps to block sun glare. Plus your not adding chemicals into the ocean.

Answer to question:
Yes, put conditioner in and leave it in. My wife and other women will distribute it using a wide tooth comb. Does not matter if you use leave in or regular one. I know one female surfer in Santa Cruz, California, that keeps a bottle of conditioner in the back of her truck at all times. It is the regular one.

But Billie, his question was if to put conditioner on BEFORE going into the surf. Your friend with the conditioner in the truck, uses it after surfing right ?

Moisture, moisture, moisture. Always make it a point to use the showers immediately after surfing to ensure that the salt doesn't sit in hair as it drys it out as well as the scaplt. Then I would suggest either... Any type of hair serum, (garnier has a good one for like $7) or for a natural approach... Coconut oil. With coconut oil you can't apply to liberally because it starts to look oily but I does the trick
