The surf at my local, which is a point break, was working more like a beach break - it wasn't breaking off the point, it was breaking off in the open water and was much peakier. It was too weak a wave to be called an A-frame, but it was breaking both left and right... but did any of the longboarders ever go left? No. Granted, the ride to the right was longer if they were good enough to go around the broken section (most weren't), but - AND THIS IS IMPORTANT GUYS!!! - again and again, I was closest to the peak THAT WAS GOING LEFT!!!!
Almost every time I caught a wave - a LEFT - there was at least one longboarder going the "wrong" way along the face. I tried as often as I could to make it stick, but so many times, the old guys on longboards* couldn't see that they'd dropped in on me rather than me dropping in on them and someone was going to get hurt if I went head to head.
Shouting "Left! LEFTLEFTLEFT!!" as I was paddling for waves or taking off just met with confused looks - "but this is the point break, we always go right".
Good grief
