Anyone been to ASP event?

Postby BaNZ » Tue Sep 30, 2014 9:39 am

I was going to go Hossegor since the flights were really cheap but I forgot to book my holidays. The next ASP is in Peniche so I'm planning to go to the event and also do some surfing.

I'm thinking that I'm going to scream like a little girl and ask for autographs + selfie... That's if they allow you to get close to the surfers?

I take it that it will also be very boring, you won't be able to see who is surfing since it's going to be far from the shore?

I've been to a couple of events in Margaret River, WA, in 2010 and 2011.

The surf was absolutely monumental in 2010. Probably the biggest swell I saw in 2 years of living in WA. Here's a youtube link to the biggest day:

The final saw Josh Kerr get a perfect 10 with a 2 aerial wave in the dying minutes against Taj Burrow. It was amazing.

In Peniche I imagine the contest will be held at Supertubos, which breaks close to shore and is a great place to watch spectacular barrels. I was also lucky to see Nic Von Rupp surfing here on a solid day.

I like the internet for surf contests or even TV because you can watch replays and slow motion and different angles and you don't have to deal with crowds. I was at a Pro surfing contest when I was a young boy but can't recall which one (no ASP back then). One of our members thedudeabides or something like that was at the J-Bay contest. I would probably be too shy to ask for a autograph.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Yeah I watch it online but I just want to see them in person. Never been to world class surfing spots. I most probably won't get to supertubos but I'm more than happy to surf on the beginner/inter areas in Baleah.

I'm probably going to be very shy as well so I'll send my gf if I can't do it. :D

Several in Hawaii. The only one I really enjoyed was the Pipe Masters. Not really a big deal being around pro surfers as the North Shore is flooded with them from about now to right before Christmas. You see them in the line up every day and most of them are pretty respectful. Unfortunately they flood the island for 6-8 weeks every year and for most of us it was annoying. Great for the economy which is the payoff.

Why until X'mas only? The swell is gone after that or is it too cold?

Triple crown is over and most go home to their families. Once the media leaves the rest follow and the north shore opens back up to the locals.
