Surfing Waves

Looks like Hurricane Bertha will be delivering some big swell to the UK at the weekend, although possibly with wild winds
Even the south coast looks like it'll get some surf on sunday... south coast surf in summer? Whatever next?

We have Iselle and Julio coming at us. No surf so far on my island that I know of.

All the wind but none of the waves? That sucks!

They are predicting surf but nothing yet

Looks like Iselle is going to generate some surf on the east side of the Big Island before it hits and also they are predicting surf from it on the east side of Oahu but the other island block a swell from that angle. It maybe that it will create a south swell if it decides not to slam us and continue on it's predicted path. Hurricane Julio if it goes as predicted will likely generate a huge swell on this side of the island by tomorrow or the next day but nothing yet. Hopefully it will groom the sand bar to make a long even right breaking wave. Hopefully I will be able to catch some of the swell it makes (and survive)

Might have been a small bump. There were a bunch of surfers out at Horners this evening but from my perspective it looked the same as the past two nights. Might be I missed something. I will try to stop and check it out better as I drive by tomorrow.

This morning it's almost twice as big maybe 10 foot Hawaiian. Hmmmmm.....I wonder how big it will be when I can surf it tomorrow?

Hopefully, Ol' Man, it will be big enough.
Am curious whether the water temperature changed with the storm.

I don't know but the water temperature has been perfect lately not too cold or too hot....just right. I will try to get some pictures of the surf on my way home from work today.

Sounds like a doozy of a storm up your way old man, even made the news down here in Australia.

Unfortunately it seems smaller and blown out. It could be the same size but I didn't see any surfers out this evening but it definitely had better form this morning

I was meaning to ask, with that photo is the wave breaking over a reef or just a sandbar? It has that classic curved wave shape, like some of the reefs (Teahupoo perhaps most famously)

Looks like a lot of water moving around - you end up paddling madly to get anywhere and then waves breaking in all different spots.

Horners in both photos is a reef break but it is a fairly deep reef. The bad thing when it is big and breaking all over isn't the reef , it's getting pounded when you get caught inside. The way the currents are and the wave break if a wave breaks on you it won't be just one wave. It will push you far enough inside that before you can get out of the way another wave will catch you and pound you again. I have taken some gas there more than once. It can be really nice and I have had some awesome tubes there both backside and frontside. I am really not so great of a photographer because I tried to take a bunch of pics but only a few turned out and it really doesn't do the day justice. The wave in the second picture is probably 5 feet but it was breaking 8 feet Hawaiian just couldn't get the shot. But some days it is a peeling tube...not very often. So I chose to not get the big waves and go to the sand break. Oddly the sand bar break was the same as it has been the last couple weekends. Later in the day the surf came down at Horners and cleaned up and there were surfers out till dark. I just saw it driving while going to and from work.
