What bit me?

No, not some clever quiz, I'd actually like to know

I went out yesterday afternoon, hopped off the rocks (I didn't wade through any rock pools, but did stand in a couple of ankle deep pools while wading out), paddled around the back of the line-up, sat on my board, and almost immediately felt a pain in my leg.
I reached down and there was something hard and round stuck to my leg, which I pulled off. There wasn't a huge amount of blood, but there was a lump in my leg, and it left a stinging feeling - not as bad as a jelly stinger, but more than just the puncture wound.
The pain hung around for about half an hour and then faded, but didn't go away completely for hours.

Back on the shore, there's a clear puncture wound (only small), plus a small red dot (two teeth? An unsuccessful bite? ). And this morning it still hurts a bit.

The "thing" on my leg reminded me of getting bit by a leech (but more painful, and it was more solid), but I can't work out what bit me.

So what nasty little critter in the water bit me? :!:

Octopus? Sea urchin? What did you do with the round thing you pulled off?

Pulling it off was quite hard, I had to rip it off with my leg and hand still underwater, and so it disappeared into the deep... :bigoops:

there are some species of octopi which have a little poison in their bite and makes it worse than just a bite, some can actually be fatal but obviously this wasn't.

mate, you live in Australia, As we all know, everything is deadly. Harden up, you were probably just bitten by an Aussie butterfly, nothing too serious :D
