Surfing with back foot not dominant?

Postby malibumac » Sun Feb 23, 2014 5:52 am

I want to be more explosive with my back foot. I am a goofy footer yet I am right foot dominant and I often find myself trying to turn with my front foot which doesnt work very well for tight turns. How can fix this?

This Malibumac is a brain and handedness question, consider yourself among surfing's elite.
Goofy footers yeah!
Now to the question; turns are about weight and unweighting between your back and front foot. with your standard back foot placement try a few tweaks heel pressure and toe pressure and allow the front foot to put rotational pressure to move the front of the board in the arc you wish it to go.
You can pressure stomp the tail with your back foot slightly to side of the stringer to engage the rail at an angle that will begin the turn and combine a lean or torque your body following your leading hand into the direction you wish to go. Your eye line then leading hand and then full body should follow through this and your eyes and leading hand should be leading to the next turn.
It will feel counter-intuitive at first stick with it. tweak it little by little and your style of turn will evolve :D

You can see the pressure on the back foot and a the tail starting to throw a rooster tail, tail engaged

Note leading hand pointing and vision fixed to next section

That puts me in position to turn off the weak top and do it all over again gaining speed for further down the line
