Surfing Waves

Hey all,

So its looks like im headed up the Gold Coast for a few months. Just hoping some of you could suggest any good places to surf. Not expecting people to reveal there favourite seceret spot or anything.

From what i've heard surfers paradise is anything but, so was just hoping people could suggest where is worthwhile visiting PM me if youd rather not post on a public forum.

Not many secret spots left on the Gold Coast!

Broadly speaking, you've got two options - the beachies and the points. Surfers down to Burleigh is basically one long beach break, which is a bit mediocre and there's one hell of a sweep pushing you north - it's like the worst rip you ever felt.

But then you get to Burleigh and then its all good as far down as Tweed Heads
All the points can be a bit of a free-for-all, but it'd be a rare session where you didn't get a few waves even if you have to make do with the second-best wave.

Currumbin Alley is a good starting point (and not just because I'm biased because I live there) as it's pretty mellow compared to Snapper or Burleigh. Lots of different options and its fairly protected from all but NE winds.
Snapper (at Coolangatta) is well worth a surf but the crowd the other day was described as 'like The Big Day Out but without the music or the vibe' on the surf report. It really is mental.

The beachies are better down at the south end of the GC too with a bit more form (although you'll still end up in a different suburb from where you started due to the cross-shore drift).

To the north of Surfers, you've got the spit (which I've not got round to surfing yet), but for the range of options and the surfing lifestyle, then I'd recommend the south end of the GC.

Give us a shout when you're up here and we can go for a paddle at the Alley.

I agree with DBB, I went down to snapper and also burliegh and are quite heavy points that regularly throw barrel sections, U need to be in top shape to get out.

I stayed in broadbeach and while its an extension of surfer paradise, its not hell in the water like surfers is, also if the banks are playing ball there are some nice waves!

The spit was a nice break and kind of protected, but u do need to watch the current that pulls u into the jetty
