Surfing Waves

hey guys looking to make a trip out to Costa Rica. anybody have experience or been out there know about locals being okay with out of country guys surfing. Trying to beach hop. any stories or good times????

I just got back from Tamarindo a couple weeks ago and the locals are very accomadating to foreigners as long as you show respect...just like anywhere else. One frustration you may find is of course the local beginners that go for every wave, often times pushed into them by a husband, boyfriend, etc...so, some lack of etiquette there, but otherwise a great place to surf.
Be careful of reef (right in front of the Diria Hotel). It is a good idea to pay attention at low tide and look for reef you want to avoid. Low tide here is very low...the range is anywhere from 8-11 feet depending on the lunar cycle. So, when it is low the beach literally triples in width. My wife and I used this as an opportunity to identify an area to surf with a sandy bottom. Pick a spot to lineup with on the beach and stick to it otherwise you will drift south potentially into the reef boneyard.
Personally, my wife and I found a nice break just north of the Diria hotel by about 50 yards. The lineup point I used was another blue hotel sitting on the beach. This spot was nearly an all sand bottom situated in between the rocky area to the south and the crowded river mouth to the north. We had nice shoulder high waves everyday.
Personally, one of the joys of going to CR is the locals...they are very kind and the water is warm and clean. I guess, all in all, respect gets respect. I've been vibed far more in Hawaii that in CR.
