Next level in surfing Florida waves

Postby oceanbreak » Tue Sep 17, 2013 1:41 pm

hi guys,

I've been surfing for about 6 months now, almost daily. I was a slow learner at first.. took me a almost a month to stand up, 2 more to get over the fear of catching green waves (lots of nose dives)

I progressed from 11' to 9' to 7'10 popout, 7'6 and now a fatty 6'6. I ride florida waves which are usually 1-4' (semi)closeouts. Last night i felt really in the moment and was riding the face and doing some decent quick bottom turns into the wave until it dies.

I think im ready to take it to the next step. What should i start doing more? fast pumping? weaving up and down the wave? going up and back? Mind you these are florida waves.. i wish i could ride the face for 10-20 secs and do all sorts of tricks but we're lucky if we get one/two turns on a given wave.

What's the surf like in Cagayan de Oro state?
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

My way of doing things is one turn at a time so the first maneuver you need to conquer is the bottom turn. Bottom turn is the most important one because it sets up everything else. I have recently restarted surfing and at 30 minutes a week it has taken me over 3 years to feel like I have my frontside bottom turn down. Backside I had that much earlier, maybe because I approach it as an all or none maneuver "go for broke" as we used to say. From there it depends on your board and the waves but a turn off the top or a cutback would be good to learn. I think it is important to learn to make your board go faster so pumping speed turns on really fast waves are good to learn. Once you learn to go fast then learn to slow down.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
