Leg rope and knee injuries?

Postby Hoody » Sat Mar 23, 2013 3:55 am

Stuffed my knee last weekend down Angourie way. Third wave of possibly the best swell Ive experienced :( Looks like its a partially torn medial ligament. Blew the take off and got pumelled, but it wasn't impact at the bottom that did it. It was about 6 seconds into the rag doll session whilst well and truly under water that I felt something let go in the right knee. Pretty sure I was clear of the board so thinking it may have been the legrope pulling the knee in a lateral direction (the medial ligament is whats gone).

So my question is has anyone else out there experienced this. Also does anyone wear a leg rope on the thigh to reduce leverage at the knee joint?

Wow, that's hard luck a medial ligament is a sorry type, injury.

With partial tear the ligament if encouraged to heal completely will thicken up the remaining fibres, importantly do your full rehabilitation exercises, one way to ensure you have a stable joint after the injury is to ask your physical therapist how to strengthen and establish a correct balance in all the muscles that work through the knee. It is also possible you may have cartilage damage I hope you have had a full examination and diagnosis to help you decide your course of treatment.

How did it happen ? On full rag doll, who knows, your best guesstimate is probably right!
Would leash on ankle or just below knee ( longboard style ) make a difference? and thigh ( possible risks vascular compromise or cut by the cuff there or muscle de-briding )

The leash on the lower leg has some boney structure support , I prefer the just under the knee leash, for boards of heavier weight, I think you were unlucky thank heavens it wasn't a SUP

Yep not the best of luck Jaffa, but kind of asked for it. About 6 weeks ago strained a muscle in the right thigh, probably a knee stabiliser. Never stopped surfing despite some pain and got away with it for a while.Probably not wise aye, considering this knee will keep me out of water for atleast 6 weeks probably more. Such is life.
Hopefully with rehab will be stronger than ever. Hell Mick Fanning ripped the hamstring from the bone and seems to be going OK!

Yep an angry Angourie hits hard, great wave to try when it's powered up
Hope you got a good one or two before you got the smack down :D

It was so good. Same swell that created the Quick silver pro Kirra final between Slater and Parko. Gotta fes up though. The 2 waves I got were further in and had no where near the power or form of the point break. When I did paddle out the back my mate said he'd just caught the best 3 waves of his life. There were only about 7 guys out at this stage. I sat out wide and watched a dude from Byron drop and slot into barrel after barrel after barrel on a big old single fin. There was no way I wasn't going to have a go. Wave was beyond me, but when knee is good, swell is East at 13 plus seconds and wind is west I will be back.
