The shortboard limit

Postby drowningbitbybit » Mon Jan 28, 2013 1:22 am

So, I've been thinking of getting a high-volume "shortboard" - something with the volume and paddleability of a fish, but with a proper rocker and rails.
My first custom board was something like a 7'4 x 21 x 2 3/4 thruster, and I remember it as surfing like a shortboard, although as I was still a bit of a newbie at the time, that might have just been how it felt at the time. I sold that board... and now wish I hadn't :bang:
Although by now, Im sure I would've snapped it

Now I'm going to get something similar, but probably around the 6'10 mark.
So what do you think? What do you think is the limit for a shortboard?
I don't mean "what's the definition of shortboard?" I don't really care what you'd call it - but how far do you think you can push the length and volume and for it to still feel like a shortboard?

I reckon around 6'10, but happy to hear what others think, unless you're a 45kg 14-year old riding a 5'8 wafer - this is fat old man's talk

at 200lbs my 6'8 is the biggest size I own but still surfs as a shortboard. I have tried longer boards and own a bigger gun but feel like I give up too much perfomance when I used anything bigger.

What are the other dimensions?
I'm thinking relatively wide and thick - but not fishy wide and thick - and carrying some of the volume towards the nose for ease of paddling, with a flat section in the middle but plenty of nose and tail rocker.

Not as much tail rocker as you;d think, but plenty of nose rocker. 6'8 x 20 1/8 x 2 5/8

Right, just ordered yet another board

6'10 x 21 x 2"3/4 with a slightly fuller outline than usual towards the front, with quite a lot of rocker on the front, and a little on the back. 1-into-2 concave on a thruster set-up.

My shaper isn't the worlds fastest so it'll be a little while before I report back on how it goes :surfing:
