hello, this my first time posting in this forum. Im 15 and wanted to start surfing. I bodyboard and bodysurf at my local beaches. i know some of you guys might hate bodyboaders but i love it. which got me thinking laying down on a board is so much fun, but it must be so much more fun standing up. And i think i would have a jump start on surfing bc i already know how to read waves and stuff. What do you guys think i should do to start?

krash,
we don't hate boogie boarders and body surfers. These are integral aspects of being a waterman. In fact, when I get too tired to paddle out back and sprint for another wave, I'll "rest" by body surfing. There is nothing better than being in the sea.

You asked what to do to begin surfing. The answer is easy to provide. Get a 9ft longboard and use it in the mushy broken waves for half to two days. Then paddle out and start trying to catch 2 to 3 ft waves. Don't get into the mix with seasoned surfers. Watch them, however, to see how they paddle out, when they paddle to catch a wave, and the things they do once they are popping up and making the first turn.

You are encouraged to learn to board surf because it is MASSIVE fun. Making the drop on an unbroken wave is a tremendous thrill.

Haha LB represent! Don't know if you still visit this site but the water is freezing now. If you wanna start surfing check out Skudin surf camp... they should be up and running this summer if the city doesn't close the beach off to fix the boardwalk

Bodysurf and boogeyboard here. Just got surfboard this summer, have not used it. No worries I have found this site to be welcoming to all. You actually in a sense started already. You have ridden some waves so you have that. Do start with a big board and work down to smaller boards

My best advice is start off on a board you feel comfortable with be it a long board or a short board and go from there. Your height and weight can play as a factor as well. As for hating body surfers nah none here brah only thing I find annoying are skimmers. With all that said Aloha fellow surfer and east coaster and I wish you luck! (I live in Virginia haha)
