Shoulder pain whilst paddling!?

Hey,
I’ve been having issues with my shoulders recently whilst paddling hard and it’s causing me a fair amount of pain which sometimes cuts my sessions short.
I was wondering if anyone has had similar and can offer remedial advice?
The pain feels as though it’s in the rotator cuff muscles (but I’m no expert!). . and sometimes really deep in the joints. .
If anyone knows of a good way to strengthen up for paddling or what might be causing the pain it’d be great to hear!
I’ve got a week trip to Portugal in January and don’t want to be aching out of the water every day!!
Thanks,
Sandy

See a physio, shoulders are complicated. The training pages on here are good
https://surfing-waves.com/surf-fitness/training.htm plus front crawl (apparently as I'm rubbish at it)
I have a similiar issue with my right shoulder which stops me doing surf related exercises, fortunately its fine when I'm paddling, I thought it might be to do with RSI on the PC all day. I have seen docs, physio's, you name it, no one knows what the problem is.
Wherabouts in PT are you going to?

Hey man, thanks for the reply.
Yea I'll go see a physio I think, I sit at a PC all day too. Also climb alot so my shoulders faily get put throught thier paces!
I'm heading to Vila do Bispo, plan to surf anywhere around sagres really. . the size of the waves'll dictate what beaches we surf I guess. Vila do Bispo's pretty handy. . right in between the south and west coast.
Thanks again fro the reply!

I'm no paddling saint, but lots of surfers have paddling techniques that just scream 'shoulder pain to come' - particularly if you take really wide shallow paddles, meaning your shoulders bear the force rather than your back.
This (on another forum) has a good discussion of paddling, techniques and shoulders (check out Nick Carroll's comment about 1/2 down the first page - Nick is a surfing journo, brother of expro surfer Tom, and knows his stuff).

You may feel pain only when you move your shoulder, or all of the time. The pain may be temporary or it may continue and require medical diagnosis and treatment. If’ they’re grinding, dislocating, inflamed, crunchy, or pain provoking, than your surfing is suffering, and when you can’t surf because of joint pain, it’s a terribly frustrating thing. If you’ve had an issue with your shoulders, you’ve probably at one point seen a physio (physical therapist), or sports med doctor, or who knows, the list is endless. Whoever you saw likely prescribed you some band external rotations or some other type of posterior rotator cuff strength work. That’s unfortunately only one piece of the puzzle with shoulder issues.
Shoulder Arthroscopy is a procedure that orthopaedic surgeons use to inspect, diagnose, and repair problems inside a joint.
