Some questions about board art

Postby Buttertoes » Thu Nov 15, 2012 7:53 pm

Hi all, I have done many searches but have some specific questions I haven't found answers to. If you can help me out that would be great!

I picked up an old peeling (pinstripes/vinyl art) and dented epoxy board as a cheap experiment with a smaller board and something to have some fun with.

I've read that posca pens or spraypaint are the most recommended materials, but there are mixed opinions on using a brush. Some say it's going to chip off, others say if it's used fairly thin it'll be fine. I have plenty of bottles acrylic artists paint and would like to use what I have. If I paint it with a brush will it be only useful on a wall? I'm going to wash it, sand it and top coat it when I'm done.

The deck looks like someone took a hammer to it. I think it's beyond repair, but if the painting has enough texture I think it won't be so noticeable. Do you think I'll regret not filling the 1000,000 dimples after putting in hours painting it?

That's it for now, any thoughts are welcome :)

I've used Posca pens, spray cans and brushes for painting boards - generally for repairing coloured sections, rather than for art, but it shouldn't make a difference. I only covered the new sections with a spray lacquer and it was fine - not perfect, and it does chip, but if you put a proper top coat over it, then I think it would be fine.

Can't imagine filling in a million dimples would be fun...

buttertoes,
nice to see another post from you. I'll share some thought with you related to your query.

1. A brush often applies thick paint. Thick paint, whether on a surfboard or any other surface, tends to peel or chunk off. If you are careful and make the paint layer thin, it'll hold OK
2. surfaces that will be painted, whether with spray, brush, or roller, should be roughed or scuffed with sandpaper. Use 200 to 400 grit. You don't need much "roughing," but a little will help the paint stick
3. if using pens, you don't need to rough the surface with sand paper
4. your plan to sand painted surfaces smooth and coating them is a very good plan'
5. I'm sorry, but don't understand your question about brush and wall

Thanks guys!

I tried to get paint pens but can't find the posca brand and didn't trust the local alternative. I'm going to use brush and paint and see what happens. What I meant Billie was 'if I paint my board with a brush, will the board be good for nothing more than hanging on a wall' instead of surfing it :)

I picked up Krylon acrylic clear coat to top it when done (recommended on several sites). I have to say it's hard to imagine it holding up to wax, roof racks and surf boots, but we will see!

Even covered in tape, pencil lines and a few blobs of paint the board looks 99% better than before. It had previous owners who clearly did not love it. Perhaps I'll post a pic when it's done :)

That's similar to the stuff I've used - and, yeah, it's not super-durable, but does a reasonable job. Be aware that the acrylic lacquer takes several days to completely dry - don't rush in and put on a second coat two hours after the first coat when the first coat "feels" dry. Take your time and you'll get a good, fairly strong finish 8)

Show us some pics when you're done! :D

Also don't do what I did with my nsp, and put on thick layers of basecoat for your paint job. I must have added at least a lb to an already heavy board.

Posca + spray lacquer is a good combo, also spray paint stencilling works as long as you are conservative with your dosage.

I hadn't thought of the added weight of the paint, but I was worried the thicker the paint was the more likely it would be to chip off, so I used it fairly thin. It's pretty much done now, it just needs a top coat. It was pretty fun to do :) If the paint holds up to use maybe I'll try it again someday.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Let's see if I can figure out how to post a picture... lol

Bloody hell
That's amazing! I thought that it was going to be the usual surfboard scrawl, not actual proper art!

Show that great piece around and you could well have a way of financing a swag of new boards for your self.
Seriously good work!

Wow!
Next time I want it in a fully documented how-to guide for the site.

I'm sure there are lots of surfers who would want a piece of art on their board like that, nice work.

if you just want to cover dings, bad repairs or snaps with paint and not necesarily do art, try also using masking tape to do designs before you paint over it with spray cans, also i've used shampoo to do designs then spay paint over it and then wash off shampoo, best when you use other colors under tape or shampoo and spray another on top
