Rashvest/Hood in one?

Postby Dantastic1985 » Fri Oct 19, 2012 12:41 pm

Hi Guys,

Im collating my winter stuff to keep warm and like the concept of this bad boy but am a little worried it may be restrictive to paddle in. Has anybody had one or similar and experienced it being an issue?

Cheers

Dan

While im asking silly questions I will also fire this out there. Are there any benefits to having surf boots or surf socks? I mean, are boots better than socks or vice versa.

Obviously there both better than having blue feet after an hour in the north sea.

I can't comment too much on the hooded vest but i would imagine with the stretch it shouldn't be too restrictive compared to a wetsuit with a hood.

I personally would go for socks, but depends how cold the water is that you are surfing. If really cold i would say maybe some 2mm as you still want feel for the board :)

I'll stick with my 7mm Flashbomb boots, thank you very much  And I wear some polyolefin socks under those for some extra insulation and to make the boots slide on and off easily.

Seriously when the water dips below 40 deg. F, I don't think I'd last very long with 3mm or lighter boots, but I guess everyone has different tolerances.

Ha ha. Im looking at 3mm minimum. I figure ill be able to feel the board better if i can feel my toes! I just wanted to see peoples general opinion on socks v boots.

We went in at rhossilli in feb this year with hire boots on and i dont know if it was the fit or whatever but the toes kept folding under my feet on pop up. Not ideal!

I bought one and used it, kept me nice and warm and did not inpeede movement. However, what I did not like was the neck where the vest and hood connect, it seemed to chocke me, quite unconfortable. Maybe it was the make, or the fit, but I stopped using it.

However, it really did work to keeping me warm

Thanks for the feedback. I havesince looked at the options of a thermal rash vest with integral hood. I like the idea of just taking it off if I get hot and not having to throw it on the beack or stuff it down my suit.

Ive since found a thinner cheaper one so I will give it a go. If its restrictive Ill cut it out and use them separately.

Bit of an update. Bought a west thermal long sleeved rashie with 2 mm neoprene hood built in. Its becone my fave bit of surfing attire. Very warm, comfortable and best of all even when wet the thermal bit isnt cold when your going in for the second time that day. Mega.

I think wetsuit socks are the type that are designed to be used with flippers for bodyboarding.

2mm wetsuit boots are pointless to me. 5mm or go home :D
