Alright so I thought I'd start one of these for people to post any ideas or anything anyone does that allows time for surfing / traveling or whatever. I went through college for basically no reason I guess, because every job seems miserable and doesn't allow enough time for surfing.

professional DJ. If you get good at it, means you lay a good 2-3 hour set for a few nights in the week and you are done. Wake up a little later than usual, keep up with the good music between sessions, maybe promote some events with the surf crowd... the good life.

Be a teacher, pay is crap but you get all the holidays off, summers, and winters.
I worked summer school at a school by the beach, which got me into surfing. I would get off at 12:30 and go surfing every day all summer. Had a blast...

Did my school days as a waiter and a bartender....great surf jobs, and you can travel and get work in any resort town!!
After I graduated it was hard to give up the bar life...I had the sweetest deal with free golf and hours to surf every day we had swell.
I now have my own business...have had some months where work is overwhelming and my surf count goes way down, but when things are smooth I have 3-5 sessions a week.
The sure bet is a beach bum!!...no medical, dental, or retirement tho!!

You can always tell a true surfer....he has made choices and possible sacrifices to create an existence that allows him to get to the beach when others are at work!

Excellent suggestion.
Also, anything that you can do online and on your own time. That way you can be anywhere as long as you have internet access, and there are waves.
Shift work job. I know people who are on 12 hour shifts, 3 times a week. That leaves you free for 4 days a week.

Hi wavehunt & Travel_RN, welcome to Surfing Waves!
4 days off a week really opens up the chance to get some waves. Anything at night leaves you free for a dawn patrol, as long as it's near the ocean.
Many years ago I stacked shelves on the night shift of the local supermarket. I loved finishing up and being first out in the lineup.

Don't mind that sort of survey Jaffa, at least it's of benefit to those on the forum. We can see the same results that the OP can. It's always baffled me why they bother with those surveys. If you are struggling to know your market that much that you need surveymonkey, should you really be in this sector?

I'm studying in Australia and working part-time as a chef. I have time to go surfing nearly everyday. Working part-time might the answer? But it doesn't allow traveling (if you mean chasing swells) and it's just enough to pay the rent. Freelance is also a good choice if you can really do it.
