DONT YOU HATE DINGS THAT RUIN EPIC SESSIONS?

Postby Andra2000 » Sun Jun 17, 2012 11:45 pm

I was wondering if you guys wouldn't mind sharing your experiences in the line up ....
especially how do you feel when you get a ding during a good session?

Personally I hate having to bail out of the water when i get a ding.. even if it sucks.. its just so frustrating to have to get out... and then having to fix it sucks..

how do you guys feel?
:blah:

Really!
It's called a "gedoverit", seriously, enjoy the good session for the session.
When you've surfed for a longtime dings are SFA, human dings are a bit worse ,fix either or both and go surf again.
Enjoy what you have each surf and don't fuss your digit about the other stuff!
In the tradition of Crocodile Dundee.

If it had more volume in the thickness a 5' 10" Simmons shape might have come out of it but it was a performance longboard and the volume was in the length.
Was a sweet board while it lasted, won it in a contest.
It got snapped duckdiving a small wave, exactly as you see it.
The walk up the beach from a sub three foot surf with a broken board

I had one of my best friends drop in on me just for fun. He managed to impale his board into the rail of my surfboard. I was so upset. Not only did I need to get out of the water, but my vintage single fin stinger swallow tail had a huge rail ding . I do wish I still had that board today, even with the ding. I have moved on and forgiven him. In the scope of life, it's really not that big of a deal.

Get yourself a roll of silage tape (farmers tape). The stuff they use for patching holes on bales of silage. Its waterproof, stretches around contours so that it forms a perfect seal without those annoying folds that you know will let water in. You'll need to cut it rather than tear it so that you get an even edge because its so stretchy. I have patches of it on 2 of my boards for more than a year and still perfect. The only thing you have to watch out for is sharp edges on the ding that might cut the tape. Sand these off first if there are any. Takes less than 5 minutes and you can be back in the water. I usually wait until I have 3 or 4 dings to fix before bothering.

This is the stuff, you can get it in any agricultural type hardware shop for less than a couple of quid a roll, and should fix 50-60 average size dings. If you take out a fin box you're still screwed though :ninja: :

Your goal shouldn't be to get on a small board as soon as possible, it should be to surf and have as much fun as possible.

Duct tape will work, or Solar Rez..a UV activated resin that can have you back in the water in minutes. Keep in your trunk as as first aid kit for your session. I have surfed with holes and broken off fins just to keep surfing.
Just don't shove wax in there, it will make the repair harder in the long run.

Only problem I found with duct tape is that it folds rather than stretches so can let water in if it has to go around contours, rail etc.

Yep I can this was a thin light performance Mal and with good technique and my 100 kgs I can push it under small stuff bigger stuff I have to get the timing absolutely right or just revert to the Eskimo roll! a 100kg sea anchor works well, if it doesn't Hughey has rejected me and a photographic session might happen.

I no longer have to go in when I get dings. My new board has closed cell foam. :D
