I was having a conversation with a friend of mine that other day that does not surf and she mentioned something about surfers being all "dirty hippie dudes". Not sure what the hell that even means but just curious what you guys think about that?
I have met doctors, lawyers and investment bankers, people in non-profit, unemployed, and all walks of life but never really a "dirty hippie dude". Is that a general perception people have about surfers or is that just a misguided stereotype? Very curious where that came from. What are your thoughts?

Your friend is suffering from a overdose of terminal "Point Break" watching, there a surfers in all occupations and levels of society, strangely and fortunately once they hit the water land status goes out the window!.
Surfing once upon a time was a seaborne part of the counter revolution, ie hippies, the surfing world has moved on so should your friend! BTW many hippies actually washed a lot.
To quote "Only a surfer knows the feeling!"

You'd look like a dirty hippy too if you'd just spent 3 or 4 days living in a van following the swell. Back to work on Monday for me though.

That'd be me if I had blonde dreadlocks. Luckily I'm just a dark sunburn-clad, buzz cut Asian dude so nobody is suspicious of me.
