Surfing Waves

So, I know I'm new around here, but I just got some good news for myself regarding surfing potential. Since I posted up the other day, I haven't gotten a chance to go hit the surf yet, mushy though it is around here. It's also pretty low in terms of water temp and I have no wetsuit. Anyway, on to the good stuff -

I found out a few days ago that I'm going to get to go down to Peru in June for a little R&R. Should have plenty of time for hitting the beach and getting in some surfing. Now, from what I've read I'm not 'ready' to fully take advantage of the kind of surf that Lima can throw at the shore in June. Has anyone gone down there recently? And, if so, what should a 'beginner' need to know going down that way? Thanks guys.

I live and, of course, surf, in Lima, Peru. I don't know many other cities of 9 million people that have year-round consistent surf such as we have here. (If the 9 million scares you, don't worry. Although some popular spots can get a bit crowded at times, there are surprisingly few surfers here, probably due mostly to socio-economic conditions.) Anyway, June presents better surf conditions than the summer for this part of Peru (Lima), so I can pretty much guarantee you will get waves. Although I went out today and had a great session. If you are a beginner, I would suggest heading down to a beach in Lima called "Makaha." There are a dozen or so surf instructors with rental boards and wetsuits available, and the waves there are pretty gentle. Lima has a lot of good breaks, and they represent a pretty nice variety of waves. If you're not a beginner, about a half hour south of Lima is Punta Hermosa with some more nice surf spots (San Bartolo, Puntas Rocas, Senoritas, etc.). Even further south you have Puerto Viejo, then Cerro Azul. Now, if you have time and ability, try to see if the swell is good up north in Chicama (near Trujillo). Long bus ride, short plane ride. That is an incredible wave.
