Flowboarding

First new thread.
I have just started learning to surf after years of wanting to try. I live about a 2 and a half hour drive from the nearest surfing places. And it's almost November. In England. And work stupid hours a week.
A friend told me about Flowboarding. Is it a good way to practice balancing, standing, staying standing in the "off-season" or a total waste of time? I appreciate that it is not going to be quite the same as the real thing but are there any benefits or will I just be wasting my time?
Any pointers appreciated.
