decent swell on its way to l.a.

Postby stereoscope » Tue Aug 30, 2011 8:22 pm

surfline says 5 to 7 feet this weekend in north l.a.

im just now getting somewhat comfortable on my 6'3, usually surfing 2-3 foot beachbreak in venice/santa monica. i can drop in fairly reliably now, and just did my first bottom turn. should i try surfing swell that size yet? is it usually easier or harder? im going to head up to a point like sunset or malibu and avoid venice/santa monica, which will probably be closing out.

My first surf session at Malibu as a 12 to 13 year old surf grom did not go well. I busted the tail off my board. I was not ready for that spot with little to no experience. Now I would love it, except everybody does, and it is packed with surfers. I would stick to Santa Monica for now.

sorry for the super late reply... i wound up heading to sunset. it was pretty big and really really crowded. no way wass i going to be able to take of close to the point, so i paddled out down a ways, but the further i got from the point, it was more like big heavy closeouts. i tried paddling out, but the water was so powerful that big rocks were rolling everywhere underneath me and smashing up my shins. i realized this was not a good place for me to be so i walked back and just watched for a little while.

heres a bit of video i took, i wish i had gotten a better wave on video, because they got much bigger than this.

Plenty of people out there, looks tough to get a wave to yourself.

Wow sunset often gets crowded but that looks ridiculous. I guess most people know it's rather protected while other spots are too big.
