Surfing Waves

I've had two surf lessons and loved it. I really want to learn to surf now. How do I know what sort of board to buy? Please advise, thanks

I'd suggest, if you can, talk to your instructors and also hit up a surf shop in your area and talk to the workers there. Have fun!

Thanks so much for replying. I'm actually totally confused because they all have different advice - After I asked the shops and my instructor, I went straight to google and forums and it seems to differ a fair bit too. I do think as I am a complete novice that I should perhaps look at buying a softboard, new or old. I guess I don't really know about the size etc I feel totally stupid but welcome the assistance.

Rent for a while, then buy a hardboard minimal, funboard or longboard.

yeah... dont buy a softie... it will become obsolete after the first two sessions...
go rent a softie, try around with that and then change to a minimal/fuboard..
something like an 7.10 or along those lines... with a nice round nose for easy paddle in..

Darn, I read a bit more on some forums and bought a second hand soft board, before I got these messages - I got a sola 8ft - I guess it doesn't really matter, I can use it a few times and then buy one of the minimals like you suggest. No doubt it will take me longer than most to get the hang of it anyway. Hopefully i'll like it and be able to move on to better things. Thank you for your advice. D
