OK so I just came across this film by scowering Netflix instant streaming movies for anything surf related. I didn't think much of it just added it to my queue and got around to watching it a week later (today)

I was BLOWN AWAY by this movie! Why didn't anyone tell me? I called my dad up whos a surfer too and he said he remembers going to see it in theaters in '78. I was pissed he never told me about it and it took me this long to discover. Mind you I'm only 29 and this movie came out 4 years before I was born. The acting, the emotional connection you get from watching these three friends growing up and dealing with things like alcoholism and the draft and growing old to the younger more flashy short boarders like Gerry Lopez on his radical new Lightning Bolt boards. And of course Gary Busey is just as crazy as he always is!

Man I even teared up a few times. And you can tell its made by real surfers not some hoakie hollywood slap in the face cheap movie either. If you haven't seen this movie (which I'm sure most of you have damnit!) then find it on netflix instant streaming or on amazon or somewhere and check it out.....GREAT MOVIE!!!

Endless Summer 1 & 2 and Point Break (ya ya whatever I'll always like point break) were always my favs growing up but I gotta say this is my new favorite movie that's an actual movie involving surfing....

In my opinion it's a cheesy teen movie, but has some funny scenes. The director said that it's about 'mateship' being the central experience in surfing. It isn't for me.

It's a celebration of alcoholism and dysfunctional malibu shapes, but appraently Gary Busey is like that in real life so there's some authenticity right there.

:D

Well I thought it has good soul to it.....and deals with many issues of the day....including the emergance of shortboarders and how the longboarders of the days passed were thought of

I just discovered Big Wednesday about 2 years ago and also loved it (also streamed it on Netflix).

From the opening scene of watching Jan Michael Vincent trying to paddle out in the morning completely hungover (or still drunk from night before?) was great. Gary Busey basting himself with butter and jumping in the oven at the house party...you know that was ad-hoc Busey and not scripted in. He's insane!!!

Awesome flix and loved how the incorporated Jerry Lopez into the story.
