Calling Waves

Postby wopfish » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:14 am

I surf a busy break - VERY BUSY !!!! Down under.........

Anyhow I'm just considering peoples thoughts when people call waves on an extremely busy beach break......... I find it annoying as hell when theres five people paddling for a wave and some one calls it although they are in no better possy as the other four people. At busy breaks like this one I tend to ignore someone calling it and paddle for hell for it and then only pull off if that person then starts to plane or pop up first. Otherwise IMHO they are really being overly confident or cocky to be calling it..... and I get mightily pi**ed off if they call it and then fail to make it so the wave goes un ridden.

I honestly think at over crowded beachies certain etiquettes dont apply and that the location istelf and the amount of people jokeying for the wave kind of have to self regulate on the day. I rarely see the older locals calling waves...... and when they do they tend to be deeper and up and already riding.

Wopfish you need to move away from Manly or Bondi.
Your answer is simple watch those surfing who call do they make it or do they miss it, if you are one of four going to paddle on to the beach break.
1. go to another peak.
2. burn the ones who can't surf as well as you believe you can. Keep the anger and enjoy the ego trip!
3.Shout louder, paddle harder, catch the wave if they miss it.
4. Call earlier than they do, Shout louder, paddle harder, catch the wave.
5. Spend a day at the Superbank you'll know exactly where you come in the pecking order.
6. Go surfing with Danny Green the boxer ( I know he surfs) and it's all sorted!
7. It's good you realise how the older locals do it maybe you could take off deeper too.
Must be crowded on the shoulders at your beachy.

Jaffa - matey sadly its hard for me to move from said beaches as it is my local - and Ive put up with the xxxxx and still do for the last ten years etc I do get to head up north on occasions and the beautifull south too..... but for my daily dosage it is that famous beach I surf.

My secret weapon of choice manages these days to get me in quicker than most - although I have had run ins with guys who call and expect me not to paddle for it and then Ive beaten them to the wave before them............

I suppose at the end of the day is that you cant always apply certain rules to busy beach breaks.......... I only call out or call people off the wave if I'm truly up and riding and I expect others to really do the same as sometimes theres almost fractions of a second between the mob getting up to their feet !!! Yes very busy...

Ridning where I do you do need a the patience of a saint and a big heart to put up with some of it that goes down..... I'm cool with honest mistakes - try and burn any egos I come across........ but do get pi$$ed off when people surf dangerously without regards for other people in the water ie drop ins etc.

Sounds like Fun at the super bank - I'm presuming theres a very small take off area there...
