I can't believe he consistently surfed dangerous waves where a little mistake could kill you and in the end he dies from the consequences of a mosquito bite. That's just rough and unexpected. A real loss for surfing.

This is totally messed up. It's messed up when an active, physically fit 32 year old man passes away. It's even more messed up because his wife is expecting to have their first child in about one month.

Couldn't believe it when I saw this story this morning. Real shame.

Official Irons Family Statement:
The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii's Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion.

Irons, 32, withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness, and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with Dengue Fever, a viral disease.

At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

Apparently he already had dengue fever and got symptoms whenever he was down, so he didn't actually catch it on that trip. That's probably why he went to a hotel as he's had it before and thought he'd be alright. I guess he then took some strong sleeping pills, it was too much for his body to handle and he didn't wake up again.

What?!?! Now that is creepy.

Around a month and a half ago a ex WQS surfer said I looked like Andy Irons when I did the best turn of my life on one awesomely big wave...

This makes me feel so absolutely rotten now.

Bali also had a beautiful paddle out for AI on the 5th of November, it`s probably the second biggest one after the one in Hawaii, many AI friends were here, like Rob Machado, Jake Patterson and others, some pics from the event here <<URL removed>>
