Hey, I live in cornwall too. What competition are you doing? (sorry this is off-topic but I don't really know where you can get the rules)

Here are some links that may help.
http://www.surfusa.org/id3.htmlIn this one you’ll see a surfers’ class called “menehune.” That’s a Hawaiian word that equates to Ireland’s leprechauns the Shoemaker’s elves. (I’ve seen a dam on one Hawaiian island that was built by menhune. Anyway,…) In surf culture, it means teenagers. Children are keikis.

The criteria to stick to is the ISA Contest criteria, this is however tricky to find a copy of?
Then you have to allow for the judges interpretation of the criteria???
But the key points are 1: manoeuvres should be made in the critical part of the wave, 2: big first manoeuvres get the highest mark and the judges attention 3:Wave selection, good wave and good first manoeuvre followed by a few nice turns will do the trick.
and finally, body language, don't slump down after your wave or throw your hands up in despair, positive surfing will get you that extra 0.5 that may mean a win.
lastly, DON'T get despondent, she will lose, decisions will be wrong, just ENJOY competition and the friendship it brings. Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy, or stop.
