Surfing Waves

My husband has recently started surfing, and I was hoping to surprise him and buy him a surfboard for his birthday. I've been doing some research, but I'm not sure what sort of board would be best for him.

From what I can gather, the BIC boards seem to be good for people who are just starting, so I was hoping to buy him one of those as they are in my price range, and he has expressed interest in buying a board from their company.

He is 6'1" and ~215 lbs.

I want to buy him a board that he can use as a beginner, but also use as he develops into the intermediate level.

I was looking on amazon and they have a few boards for sale.

Would a 6'7" board be long enough for him (Bic Sports 6'7 Surfboard)?

What about the 7'3" board (Bic Sports 7'3 Mini Malibu Fun Board) they are showing? Is a Fun Board the same as a surfboard?

As you can probably tell, I don't know much about surfing, but I would be eternally grateful if you could help me out in selecting a board that would be appropriate for him.

a 6'7 would be way too short and even a 7'3 is not long enough since your husband is tall and heavy. It is hard to tell how athletic he is and how much of a challenge the board should be but he should stay away from the shorter stuff and get on the top end of 7' at least. Too long wouldn't do the trick either.

A fun board is just a specific shape of a surfboard and you should buy him a minimal shape.

BIC boards are heavy cheap plastic things and generally speaking beginner boards, they're durable but in no way performance orientated. I am no fan of those but a beginner would not object I suppose.

He is quite athletic, the pounds are in muscle...definitely not in fat!

So if you weren't going to get a BIC board, what type of board would you get for a guy his size.

As he is quite athletic, I imagine he'll catch on quite quickly once he has his own board to play with, so I definitely want something that he can still use as well once he gets a bit better.

As rico said top end of 7' or I would even say between 8 and 9.

Speaking as a beginner myself, ive only been surfing about 4 months, Im about the same build as your man and I started on a 7,2" which was not much good. I now have a 7,10 minimal & a 9' long board and my surf is much better.
