Hey guys, 15 foot seas a rolling in Wed to RI. A) does anyone know if this is true?
B) is this dangerous for me.... i need to convince my parents that i can handle it and not die. I think i can. I have been surfing for 3 years, i have been in double over head, and came out with out a scratch. I am a pretty good surfer, i am learning to do cutbacks and can do them, just not too sharp. Id say i am an intermediat surfer.
Think i can survive?

Much depends on exactly where these 18 foot waves are rolling in? A nice point brek with an easy paddle out and plenty of channel? At a long sandy beach where you can (easily) catch a foamy into the beach if you get tired? Or a tricky reef break with a strong rip and jagged rocks as you enter/exit the water?
Your experience and ability only counts for so much. Have you surfed the same spot when it is only 6 foot? Do you know exactly how the wave will behave when it gets huge?
Really only you know whether you are ready. Your folks don't seem to think so - how much do they know about surfing? It isn't much good if anyone on a forum says you are ready or not. We've never seen you surf. Rather find one of the good surfers at your local break who has seen you surf regularly and ask him/her.
Good luck & be careful - 18 footers anywhere in the world are a BIG step-up on the danger scale!

i'd say the only way i would eva go surfing in 18ft would be if i got a toe-in by a jet ski
and if your paddling out you'd wanna do alot of trainning, such as swimming under water... to hold you breath and get fitter
and also study the place were you will be surfing
things like that to help you have a bigger chance to live

ok guys thanks, my parents dont watch me surf, everytime they do they always say "wow, you better then i thought" but never take that into consideration. They know nothing about surfing, so they dont know how dangerous it is. And there are two beaches i could surf, one is a point break which i havnt yet been able to surf since i just found it and there hasnt been a swell yet, the other is a beach break that ive surfed all three years, so i know a lot about this beach.
Now that i think about it it would be a 24 foot face.... i thought itd be an 18-20 foot face at first.
But sadly, the forecast went down to 9 foot sea, not bad but i was really looking forward to waves that size. =/
