Surfing and Weightlifting: possible to do both?

Is it possible to surf and gain mass? I'm tired of being a scrawny 130 lb kid going through my freshmen year at college. I love to surf, but I want to get serious at lifting and pack on some pounds. Do I just have to eat the loads of calories to make gains if I participate in both of these activities?

With all due respect - I have some fairly straight-up comments re your post.
What is it you actually want to achieve?

if you are naturally lean & light - no amount of lifting & eating will increase your body mass more than say, about 20% tops. And even that will be after years of gut wrenching painfully hard prime-mover lifting. Oh, and you'll have to sit on a sofa & each your whole life. No aerobic exercise to waste those calories....
As you age you'll fill out & get heavier naturally - so why speed it up?

if you want to be a good surfer - being heavy is a barrier - not an assistance. With almost every aerobic sport in existance - light is best, to be the best you can you need to be the very lightest you can be - meanwhile strong enough to do the job - but no more.
Look at cyclists, runners, climbers, pro surfers, whatever - they're all little men.

The very best thing you can do is surfing specific weights, focus on abdominals, lower back, the various forms of bench-press (inclines & declines) overhead rows - all that stuff, there's heaps in books about it.

With naturally developing muscles will come mass - but only what you need & that's all you really want trust me.

I lift on a regular basis (3-4 times a week depending on schedule) and surf on a very frequent basis (every day as much as possible). Now if you want to gain mass its not so much about lifting to pack on the muscle but what you eat. If you get some extra protein in your system and do some light lifting you will gain mass just due to the diet.

Gaining healthy muscle weight is really beneficial at a younger age (before 30 and LIFE catches up to you) and keeps your metabolism up and also is proven to help fight weight gain in the later years....
As far as professional surfers being all small... look at Laird. On tour he was smaller than he is now; but he is a BEAST now and if you have ever read his workout and diet you would understand. And last I heard of him he was cycling across America attempting to break the record... AFTER he did some crazy paddling up the Cali coast.

Echo all of responses above .. I am nearly 50 now and overweight and struggling on bigger days. I do weights occasionally just to build up the shoulders for paddling. How I wish I was 20 again when I climbed and could do one arm press ups and pull ups.
