Should I get a Quad Fin Set Up?

Postby surfergirl16 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 1:23 am

I really want a Mark Richards fish but I've looked everywhere near me and the only one at a decent price is a quad fin. Ive been riding a 6'8 funboard thruster. This is a 6'2 quad fish. I am 5'4 110 lbs.

What are the differences?

A twin will be a whole lot looser than a quad, and generally a quad will be set up to me a much more performance orientated board (but obviously that depends on shape, length, volume, bla bla bla). Quads tend to be ridden in more powerful waves than twinnies.

So, yes, they are very different types of boards.

Which is harder to ride and catch waves on. A quad or a thruster? (I'm not looking a twins)

Thruster Vs Quad? The biggest differences will be in the board design (length, volume, shape, rocker) rather than the fin set-up.
So you couldnt say either would be easier or catch waves better. It'll mostly be personal preference.
A quad would normally (but not always...) be ridden on slightly less powerful waves than a thruster.

On a medium sized/powered wave, you could ride either.

Oh, okay. The guy who is selling it to me said they were for all types of waves so thats good. Plus, the waves in San Diego are usually pretty small. I am going to look at it (and hopefully buy it if it is good) today :). If not, I might get a Sharp Eye board. Are they any good?

where abouts in san diego are you?

In answer to your questions - i spent a long time weary of trying quads. But i managed to score a free quad battail that was almost teh same dimentions as my shortboard. I fell in love with that set-up. Quads tend to be faster on takeoff and good for rail to rail surfing particulaly with the bat tail set-up. The only bad thing i could say thats it not really ideal for peaky waves as i found i wasnt able to take off as verticly as i liked with the quad i found myself having to take off at a slight angle each time and not good for ultra late drops. However as the board was mainly decigned for mushier waves it was not an issue. Thats where it really excells in mushier waves. Like the type you expect to see in san diego round this time of year.

AS far as sharp eye goes - i have heard a few good things and a few bad things about them. Then again i get all my boards custom made by http://www.sauritchsurfboards.com and am expecting a new bat tail quad on its way.

Happy surfing

Thanks for the advice. The Mark richards was not what i thought it would be. But I'm not that good so i got a thruster fish. It is a Bunker Boardshop Board (you probably havent heard of it), but it rides great IMHO. I am not that good so it really doesnt make a difference to me.

Yeah, there is one in PB and one in Encinitas. They have really good deals. It came out to around $465 I think. I tried my board out yesterday, I found out I can atleast stand up. :) The waves were very horrible. When are they going to get good? I hate this time of year.
