longboard 9ft or so is the gut reaction. Without knowing your height weight and background thats the general answer

I would go with a mini-mal around 2 1/2 ft taller than you! Bic/ NSP are good beginner boards as they are practically indestructable!

i started on an 8'er...this seems to be what the market deems as a good compromise solution ...not too heavy , floaty enough for most people...well get you out and riding etc...however once i went that bit bigger (9'4) i knew i had found my personal taste. i would say that its worth dropping a bit of cash to try a demo board at least a foot longer then you THINK you need...your miles may vary but im glad I did

I think that everyone on here is just about dead on. Go for a longboard or a bigger funboard(depending on your size) I think that is most beginners biggest mistake is hopping on a shortboard as their first surfing experience and it can be a bit frustrating. It may be smart to go to a rental place and get a rental for a day and ask if you can switch out different sized boards.
