High Intensity, Surfing Plan and Regime

Postby surfinghamster » Sat Mar 07, 2009 2:03 pm

Hello,

One of my goals in life has always been to become a good surfer. I want to be able to hang ten, go through a barrel and grind the top of a wave. Now I know none of these things are easy but I'm determined with hard work I could accomplish them. I've been surfing a few times before but all I was able to do stand up on a longboard and maybe go along a wave before it breaks if I'm lucky. What I'm looking to do is follow a high-intensity, hard working surfing regime/plan, that I can follow to learn how to become a good surfer in as short a time as possible.

My questions are:

If money was no object and you wanted to learn to become a good surfer in the shortest amount of time possible, what would you do?
*What exercises would you do?
*Where would you surf?
*Who would you train with?
*What plan would you follow?
and finally:
*Which surfer would you say has made the most progress in the shortest amount of time? Do you know what they did?

If you could answer anyone of these questions or point me in the right direction that would be brilliant.

Thanks,

I'm training right now for my next trip to Hawaii and I've been using the workout program outlined in Laird Hamilton's book Force of Nature. It's super high intensity and the diet he follows is great too. All whole foods and lots of protein. If you can stick with it, it should prepare you for the endurance needed to improve. You can find the book pretty cheap on half.com and amazon.com

Some will get it quick...and some won't. Depends on your natural ability and your previous sports. Bottom line, go surf as much as possible. Skate, and balance board will help. Mostly just go surf. Surf all conditions....dumpy beach break with fast sections will make you learn fast..or give in. Good luck.
