How many of you surfers are also fishermen?

Just wondering. I've talked to several guys at local surf spots (surfers) who also seem to be fairly knowledgable about fishing and enjoy that hobby as well. I just never really associated surfers as guys who also enjoy fishing....just as a general stereotype. Anyone else out there into fishing? I personally have grown up fishing (my dad took my brother and I fishing all the time as children) and still love to fish with my children when I can (when not surfing that is).

I fish, though usually fly fishing for trout and salmon, don't do much sea fishing.

Hi bub,
one of my surfing heroes is a life long surfer pushing 65 years. He has stories of paddling out beyond the breakers and fishing with rod & reel while sitting on his surf board. He combines both interests!

I'm not so much into fishing with rod and reel, but if i'm not surfing i sometimes do a bit of spear fishing.. At least you only kill the fish you intend to eat when using a spear. The other advantage is that spearing is best when there's no waves to surf!

Hay, Jesus went fishing with His mates, and He walked on water. That puts Him in the waterman group me thinks.

There's a guy in new zealand who does stunt fishing, bit of a nutter - this is a video of him jumping on to a marlin out of a helicopter...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ly0DTSEDD0

Then there was an article in the paper about him today, catching a marlin on a longboard.

Image

One of Matt's latest stunts saw him catch a marlin off a surfboard because "it would be a cool thing to do".
Far out to sea Matt threw a dead mackerel from his board and waited for a marlin to take the bait. Once it did, all planning went out of the window.
"That was about as far as you can plan, up till the hooking part and after that you are never too sure."
The marlin towed him six nautical miles (11.1km) - fast enough for him to stand up a couple of times, almost dragging him under and at one stage pulling him straight into the path of a container ship.
An hour and a half later he had hauled the ultimate fighting fish to the surface. He was shattered but, fortunately, 700m away from the ship.

Nutter

Don't forget the Holy Ghost . .awesome surfer as stated in Genesis 1V2 (NIV Translation) .. ".... and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. "

Sounds easier than duck diving to get to the line up.

Fishing is another way for me to enjoy the water and the ocean. More of a saltwater fisher and only really fish in the traditional since with a pole when there is no surf at all. I do really enjoy spearfishing though and have gotten into that in the last year and half and try and do that whenever I can, but if doing this inshore where I live the conditions really have to be pretty good.
