Sucks doesn't it, I did mine surfing about 20 years ago, and have popped it back out a few times since. Can't offer much advice, but you've got my sympathy.

SInce having a hip replacement, my mum keeps popping her hip out the socket (hmmm, maybe shoulda left the old one in there), and each time involves an ambulance and a gallon of extra-strength morphine (the last time she did this was on christmas morning as she tried to give a present to my sisters little kid... she has such a sense of occasion).

Anyway, my point, apart from taking the piss out of my poor mum, is that I can imagine being in a lot of trouble of something was to pop out in the water
Best take it easy til you're pretty confident its staying where its s'posed to.

It's not that bad, it just hurts like f**k and you end up paddling round in circles.

Do you have a private medical insurance? If so, perhaps a quick check up by an Ortho surgeon wouldn't be a bad idea. If not, you can arrange an appointment with a Physio via your GP. They can check out your shoulder movement in order to determine the reason for the instability and advise exercise plan if needed. It is possible that some regular rotary cuff muscles exercise would be helpful in keeping your shoulder stable. However, this depends on the finding and I would recommend you seek experts opinion as soon as you can. Ideally, you wouldn't have that shoulder popping out again to prevent over-stretching of the ligaments and possible damage.

I had two major shoulder surgeries in the last 6 months, including re-attachment of the Biceps Tendon, and wish I sought help earlier.

Hope your sholder gets better soon and if you have any questions you are welcome to PM me.

Hi All

Stu here.

I used to love surfing. But I went to Portugal last weekend and fell off my surf board (I felt stoopid, like I a complete beginner, despite surfing for 10 years, if you know what I mean).

Sure enough I dislocated my shoulder. The doctor said it may happen again and again and again, unless I am careful with the movement I adopt in the shoulder. There goes my thursday night cricket games too!

Someone please give me some good news!! Is there any hope for getting back up on the board, or will I have to actually have to learn French, and spend time with my girlfriend to get kicks?!

laters

Not good luck there for you. This is what I would recommend to my patients in a similar situation of repeated shoulder dislocation.
Do the right thing and have a medical check and have x-rays etc so you know what you are dealing with.
A single dislocation can be OK after being reduce ( put back) And specific exercises designed for your problem may strengthen the ligaments stabilising the joint , there are some adjustments that may be of help but unless a health professional literally gets heir hands on your shoulder any of this advise is general purpose.
Be aware that repeated dislocation stretches the ligaments of the joint a little more each time making the joint more and more unstable and more likely to dislocate again. Reduction of the dislocation can sometimes be spontaneous, problems can occur if the reduction of the dislocation traps or damages a nerve, this dramatically effects the motor and sensory function in the arm (sometimes permanently).
Repeated dislocation can also lead to arthritis as the ends of the bones involved in the joint get subjected to misplacement and unusual wear as the joint surfaces don't align like they should. Inappropriate ligament strain on their attachments also occurs.
+ One fact nobody really considers, another dislocation may well occur at some time when you may really need to rely on the joint.

Please follow up with the Doc, (there are some joint and ligament adjustments some Chiropractors or Physiotherapists can do, and maybe a specific course of exercises as recommended by the physio or Chiropractor. Usually a physio is more appropriate because they work in the rehabilitation process with the medicos and are often available through health insurance.

However I believe that with cricket as your other sport it may well happen again so a thorough discussion about surgery and choices around that should considered.
It better done young than waiting for work later when the ancillary damage is there too.

Expert problem requiring a little more than just forum advice.
