Man - it was just the best. Hired a 9'6" Stewart whilst I was there. Beaten up to hell but still surfed great.

Perfect mellow waves (not every day mind), empty line-up, great food, great people, beautiful weather. Best of all was surfing in boardies and actually being too HOT!!! And the rainforest mountains back straight onto the beach too.

They have Gallos Pintos for brekkie every day which is a dish of rice and beans with a bit of Tabasco - sounds a bit weird for that time of the day but a belly full of that, a mound of bacon and a good slug of fresh Costa Rican coffee and you can stay out surfing all day!!!!

We were just near Tamarindo on the west coast - beaches like Playa Grande etc.

Cost of living is pretty cheap in all. Their local currency is colonnes but dollars are accepted everywhere. Good news for us Brits as the dollar is weak as a kitten compared to the pound right now so everything is already a bit cheaper.

The only think I did notice to be expensive was car hire though - $300 minimum for a 4x4 for a week. And you DO need a 4x4 there. Proper roads don't really exist!! Oh and flights getting there are quite pricey too. Once you are there you are all set though.

I'd definitely recommend saving and getting over there for a couple of months before uni Phil - you'll have a wonderful time and a PROPER adventure. I'm 30 now and run my own business so responsibilities hauled me back but I would have LOVED to have stayed much longer.

Get yourself a copy of "Hang" on DVD - there is a great section on surfing in Tamarindo as Robert August has a house there I think.

I have a buddy with a surf shop over there too. Let me know if you plan to go and I'll drop you his email address.
