What should I put over my camera to protect it from the ocean? Since I wanted to film my friends surf whats the best position in you opinion to get the footage from? I appoligize for this simple question.

There is no 'best' position. Different angles make for better final edits.

Besides, each break will have different opportunity to shoot from different locations.

What kind of camera?

IMO if you can get them surfing with the sun somewhere behind you (or off to one shoulder) would be best , also with medium or bit more sunlight.

Most places your going to want a longer focal length, 300-500mm, and something 'fast'ish to shoot with (i.e. larger aperture).


If you want you can use a platic food bac, cut out a hole for the lens in the bottom , tape it to the camera and use that as cheap protection.

i always like getting the close ups bit difficult cause often you have to dive deep almost off the get go or allow yourself to get thrashed by the whitewater

my friend uses one of those high megapixel, digital still cameras that can do short clips of video that is completely waterproof. it makes sense because, now-a-days, the video quality on those are surprisingly decent, and when you make a surf film it's always quick clips anyways, and no protection needed. personally though, if i had the money, i'd get a 16mm camera, a waterproof housing, and a shiteton of kodachrome film, and all the other necessities
