When I was younger (high school), we used to go out at night with glow sticks tied to our wetsuit drawstrings. We'd hit up places like Leo Careo and Zeroes (noticed you were in So Cal too). Good times ... except once ...

We got a little drunk and decided to hit up a Topanga midnight session. My buddy chickened out so got stuck with video camera duty. Didn't take long for my eyes to adjust since it was a full moon and the lights from PCH and the restaurants was shining. But no sooner do I hear this woosh woosh woosh ... look up and make an outline of a longboarder charging at me full tilt. Too late to duck dive so I turtle and feel him run over me. When I resurface I just hear mad cursing ... what the f*ck this f*ck that etc etc. I get out to the lineup, sit, and notice 2 dudes coming at me from my 10 and 2 oclock. To my rear, a VERY pissed off dude is paddling to me - still cursing. These guys looked like they just got out of prison. The guy to my back finally gets to me and goes on - "You gotta make yourself f*cking known man!! What the f*ck!!" ... I figure I'm in for a serious ass beating anyway so I just start going OFF on these guys. Profanities are flying meanwhile I'm slowly trying to paddle away from the center while sitting on my board. Out of the corner of my eye I spot a wave coming and, believe you me, I'm paddling out of there like a bat out of hell. I catch the wave as far as I can, jump off my board and run straight to shore past my buddy who still has the camera in hand - "Get the f*ck back to the car NOW dude!!!" We get in the car, I'm still soaking in my wetsuit, board half assed out the window, and peel out of there like motherf*ckers.

The video is priceless ... "There goes crazy Rob for a midnight session at Topanga" ... I disappear into the night ... few minutes later some cursing, then more cursing, then a bunch of people cursing ... "Ok Rob is about to get his ass kicked" few seconds of silence ... "Ok Rob might be dead" ... I emerge out of the darkness running like hell yelling "Get the f*ck back in the car NOW dude!!" ... shaky camera and a lot of laughter from my buddy as he's running after me.

So, yeah, night surfing can be pretty cool.

I just got kitted out with a cheap waterproof potholing style headlamp for just such a thing, the last few seshes ive had have ended due to poor vision...even tho the surf was getting better and better.

hopefully this will help overcome!!

You would be surprised how well you can see at night! But you've gotta surf by city lights (street, restaurants, etc) and/or during a full moon - so yeah the tide will be a factor. The glow sticks are just there so you can spot each other easy.

That was well over a decade ago (don't bother doing the math - I still suck at surfing) so that Hi-8 cassette is long gone unfortunately.
